What is Home Health Care?
Home healthcare is skilled care provided by a Medicare certified agency under the supervision of your physician. Home healthcare provides medical care and training in the privacy of your home with the ultimate goal of restoring the highest quality of life possible. Home healthcare is very cost effective and allows clients to remain in their homes proud and independent. Senior Select Home Health provides comprehensive care that is personalized to fit your individual needs in coordination with your physician. Services range from simple assistance in activities of daily living to high-tech IV therapy.
Who pays for home care?
You pay $0 for your home health visits when Medicare is your primary insurance.
Senior Select does all of the billing, therefore you are able to concentrate on your recovery.
Medicare will pay for home health care visits if..
- Services are ordered by a physician.
- The client is homebound. This means you are normally unable to leave home and that leaving home is a major effort. When you leave home, it must be infrequent, and for a short time. You may attend religious services. You may leave the house for medical treatment and/or appointments.
- Services must be intermittent and medically reasonable.
- The home health agency caring for you must be approved and certified by the Medicare program.
What doesn’t the medicare plan cover?
Medicare does not pay for the following:
- 24-hour per day care at home.
- Meals delivered to your home.
- Homemaker services like shopping, cleaning, and laundry.
- Personal care given by home health aides like bathing, using the toilet, or help in getting dressed when this is the only care you need.
Who uses home care?
- Recent hospitalization
- Recent surgery
- Aggravation/exacerbation of a disease process
- Development of a new disease process
- Persons with chronic conditions such as kidney disease or stroke who require frequent monitoring and can no longer meet their needs alone
- Blood pressure/blood sugar monitoring
- Family/patient education and/or instruction
- Home safety instruction
- Pain Management
- Changes or additions of new medications
- Insulin administration
- Wound care
- Physical, Occupational or Speech therapy need
What services are available?
- Skilled Nursing: Includes services and care that can only be performed safely and correctly by a licensed nurse such as wound care, insulin administration, teaching, catheter care and medication management. Senior Select has a full staff of registered nurses (RN’s) and licensed vocational nurses (LVNs).
- Home Health Aide: The home health aide supplements a patient’s basic nursing or therapy care by providing assistance with personal care and hygiene needs. Medicare does not cover home health aide services unless you are also getting skilled care such as nursing care or therapy.
- Physical Therapy: The physical therapist provides goal directed approach to rehabilitation of a patient with decreased mobility, gait difficulties, weakness and balance disturbances. It may include exercise to regain movement and strength to a body area, and training on how to use special equipment or do daily activities, like how to get in and out of a wheelchair or bathtub.
- Occupational Therapy: The occupational therapist provides assistance in household management skills, energy conservation and work simplification. This therapist uses methods that attempt to improve a patient’s cognitive and functional ability to perform basic activities of daily living. You might learn new ways to eat, put on clothes, comb your hair, and other usual daily activities.
- Speech Therapy: The speech therapist can provide assessment and evaluation of neurological and cognitive disorders that cause difficulty with communication. This includes exercise to regain and strengthen speech skills.
- Medical Social Services: The medical social worker can provide assessment and possible referral to community resources for social, emotional, financial and personal problems related to their illness and recovery.
How do I get the medical equipment I need?
Your physician, nurse and/or therapist can make an assessment to determine what equipment you may need. Medicare usually pays 80 percent of the approved amount for certain pieces of medical equipment, such as a wheelchair or walker.
